Omer Fast: In Memory
In his works, Omer Fast examines the mechanisms of personal experience, memory and history. A real event or occurrence often stands at the centre of his investigation, which through interviews and reconstructions is illuminated from various different angles. The layering of narration and representation in these constructions is the outstanding feature of his filmic work. For Fast, narration is not a closed continuum, but a developing product that is constantly changing through repetition and reproduction.
Omer Fast: In Memory can be read as a visual, literary parallel to Fast’s films – and guarantees a unique immersion in a world where the easy shift between documentation, narration, memory, fantasy, reality, and fiction becomes possible.
The texts by Sabine Schaschl, René Zechlin, Hila Peleg & Anselm Franke, Tom Holert and Gideon Lewis-Kraus were carefully and heavily annotated by Omer Fast, and his remarks engage with the critical writing about his work, yet also introduce a fictional layer.
The book was edited by Sabine Schaschl and designed by Project Projects, New York.

Omer Fast untersucht in seinen Arbeiten die Mechanismen von Erleben, Erinnerung und Geschichte. Ausgangspunkt sind dabei oftmals präzise Ereignisse oder Begebenheiten, die er über Interviews und Rekonstruktion aus unterschiedlichsten Perspektiven beleuchtet. Die Überlagerung der Erzähl- und Darstellungsformen ist dabei eines der Hauptmerkmale seiner filmischen Arbeiten. Für Fast bedeutet Narration kein in sich geschlossenes Kontinuum, sondern ein sich durch Repetition und Reproduktion kontinuierlich veränderndes Produkt verschiedener Erzählebenen.
Auf die gleiche Weise konzipierte Fast auch dieses Buch. Texte zu seinem Werk – von Sabine Schaschl, René Zechlin, Hila Peleg & Anselm Franke, Tom Holert und Gideon Lewis-Kraus – hat er mit einem ausführlichen Anmerkungsapparat versehen, die zum einen die angesprochenen Inhalte vertiefen, zum anderen jedoch auch eine fiktionale Ebene in die kunstkritische Auseinandersetzung einbringen.
Das Buch wurde von Sabine Schaschl herausgegeben und von Project Projects, New York, gestaltet.
